Holding Space
Salon Magdalena, Double Bay, Sydney
Issy Parker makes ceramics that are meant to be directly engaged with every day, in the
home. While her cups, vessels, and plates are pieces of art that can be admired for their
form on a shelf or a wall, they come most alive when used to drink tea, as vases for flowers,
as platters for food. Each one a unique object, made intuitively and with love, when used
they create a moment for connection – with someone else, with the moment, with the
sustenance and beauty they are holding space for.
Just as Issy makes art that can be transformed back and forth into functional objects, Salon
Magdalena is a private home that for this show is transformed into a public space to
facilitate connection and conversation. Holding Spaces is a result of a collaborative effort
between Issy and Salon Magdalena to investigate how to show and engage with art in a way
to make it more directly intimate and meaningful.
